On Tuesday, April 25, memorial services will be held simultaneously at Retama Park and Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie for jockey Akili Gray, who passed away on Saturday, April 15. The services at both tracks will begin at 1:00 p.m.

The service at Retama Park will be held in the Showplace Pavilion. The address is: Retama Park, 1 Retama Parkway, Selma, Texas 78154.

The service at Lone Star Par at Grand Prairie will be held in the Chapel. The address is: Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie, 1000 Lone Star Parkway, Grand Prairie, Texas 75050.

Gray, who spent most of his career riding on the Texas racing circuit, sustained head injuries in a spill last summer at Gillespie County Fair in Fredericksburg, Texas. The spill occurred in a race July 2, when Gray's mount stumbled and threw him, and he was hit by trailing horses.

Gray underwent brain surgery for an aneurysm following the spill. He was later transferred to a rehabilitation center in Austin, where he had shown signs of progress. By the end of last summer, he was breathing on his own and had started to respond to verbal commands.

Gray had eventually gone home, but complications from his head injuries forced his return to the hospital recently. He remained on life support for weeks and passed away at the age of 30 on April 15.

Gray's survivors include his wife and two children. He will be buried at Inglewood Cemetery in California at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 22.
