Two Stakes Added to Breeders' Cup Meeting

Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie has added a pair of $50,000 stakes for 2-year-old Texas-breds to its 2004 stakes schedule. The $50,000 Mocha Express for colts and geldings and $50,000 Honeysuckle Rose for fillies will both be run at 6 ½ furlongs on Saturday, October 23, which is billed as “Stars of Texas Day.”

That day’s program - held one week before the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships - will exclusively showcase horses bred in Texas. The featured races will be the $100,000 Assault Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and up, and the $75,000 Allen Bogan Memorial Stakes, a one-mile test for fillies and mares.

The addition of the two stakes means that Lone Star Park will run 44 stakes cumulatively worth $17,925,000 this year - a track and Texas record. Both the Spring Thoroughbred Season (April 15-July 11) and the inaugural Fall Breeders’ Cup Meeting (October 1-31) will feature 22 stakes races. The latter includes the 21st running of the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships on Saturday, October 30.
