Lone Star Park's 2017 Quarter Horse Season Starts This Friday, Features a Nine-Race Program

(Grand Prairie, Texas - Wednesday, September 13, 2017) - Lone Star Park's 26-day live Quarter Horse Season begins this Friday, September 15. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. First race post time 6:35 p.m. 

Opening Night Giveaway

The first 1,000 fans through the admission gates will receive a premium Lone Star Park 20th anniversary logo hat!

Also on opening night, live Mariachi's will play "First Call," which is the tune normally played by bugle before each race, signaling the horses to the track. 

After the opening weekend, live racing will be held each Thursday, Friday and Saturday night through November 11. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. First race post time 6:35 p.m.  


Every Thursday night is discount night throughout the live season. Fans can enjoy Senior Citizens' Discount, whereby senior citizens aged 62 or older can receive one (1) free general admission every Thursday with valid ID*; Military Discount, where members of any branch of the military can receive one (1) free general admission every Thursday with valid military ID*; and Pepsi Can Promotion, where you can bring a Pepsi can and receive one (1) free general admission and one (1) free large Pepsi every Thursday. *Offers are valid on Thursdays during live racing only.

Opening Night Racing - Dash for Cash Derby Trials

The opening night nine-race card drew 87 horses. 69 of those will be competing in all but two of the nine races on the program. Races 3 through 9 are trials for the $175,000 Dash for Cash Derby (G3). The 10 fastest times from the 440-yard trials will advance to the final on Saturday, September 30.

Of the 69 Derby trial competitors, six have won at least one graded stakes previously. Race 4 has drawn Jose Luis Ozuna's First Kool Moon, who won the Zia Handicap (G2) July 30 at Ruidoso Downs. The gelded son of First Moonflash out of Lilly Cartel, by Corona Cartel, is trained by Jimmy Padgett.

Another in race 4 is Karen & Preston Cloud's Remington Park Derby (G3) winner Apollitical Scout. She is a daughter of Apollitical Jess and out of Swingin Cartel, by Corona Cartel. In her most recent start, she placed in the Heritage Place Derby (G2) on June 3. Apollitical Scout is trained by Clinton Crawford.

Last year's Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge (G3) winner Maxx, owned by local Grand Prairie resident Irma Vargas, has landed in race 5. A gelding by Pyc Paint Your Wagon out of Bullions N Garters, by Bully Bullion, Maxx has wins in his last two attempts, most recently the Ruidoso Derby Challenge at Ruidoso Downs in July.

Another graded winner in race 5 is Hez Kwik. A gelded son of Heza Fast Dash out of the Thoroughbred mare Kwik Kash, by Bag, he won the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile Stakes (G2) last year at Fair Grounds. In his most recent start, he finished third in the Treme Stakes (G3) also at Fair Grounds. Hez Kwik is owned by Richard Mendoza and trained by Miguel Castillo.
