Cobalt Creek Overcomes Break, Rallies for the Win in 21st Renewal of the Grade 1 Refrigerator Handicap Saturday at Lone Star Park

(Grand Prairie, Texas - Saturday, October 7, 2017) - With Ricky Ramirez in the irons, Cobalt Creek rallied from far back, after bumping at the break, to win the $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap (G1) by a neck Saturday at Lone Star Park. 

"We had a little bit of a rough beginning," said winning jockey Ricky Ramirez. "He broke decent, but got into a little bit of traffic, got bumped around. Once they opened up a lane for him, he came running."

Owned by VWP Jr. Inc. and trained by John Stinebaugh, the five-year-old gelded son of Walk Thru Fire ran the 440-yard distance in :21.593 seconds, earning a speed index of 93. The track was listed fast. Wild Tycoon broke on top to speed clear of the field, but could only hold on for the place. Favored Dutcher held on for the show.

Mutuels on Cobalt Creek returned $17.40, $10.60 and $5.40. Wild Tycoon returned $15.00 and $6.80, while Dutcher returned $2.40 on show wagers. Heza Bell Perry, Kraken Black, Jid Can Dash, He Is the Risingstar, Apollitical Wave, Ebw Catalyst, and Kw Cowboy completed the order of finish.

The win was the seventh of 27 career starts for Cobalt Creek. With the winner's share of the purse, his bankroll increased to $258,303.

Tonight's win in the Refrigerator Handicap put Ricky Ramirez on top of the rider standings with 11 wins, over Luis Vivanco who has 10. Trainer Trey Wood is leading with eight wins over Jimmy Padgett, who has six.
