(Friday, August 14, 2009) - The trials for the $121,700 Sam Houston Derby for three-year-olds going 440 yards were held on Friday, August 14 at Sam Houston Race Park. Malincha Cattle Co., Inc.'s Charal Kid emerged as the fastest qualifier, dueling for the lead early in his trial, taking over, and then drawing away powerfully to cross the wire two lengths in front in :21.735. The sorrel colt by Streakin La Jolla out of the Strawfly Special mare The Special Feature earned a Speed Index of 95 for his effort. He is trained by Eusevio Huitron and was ridden to victory by Santos Carrizales.
