Chauffe Au Rouge Repeats In Retama Turf Breeder's Cup

(August 9, 2003) - Saturday night's $50,000 feature at Retama Park drew a field of eight talented grass specialists, but the old man of the bunch, Chauffe Au Rouge, proved to be tough once again on the Retama Park lawn.

Eclipsing his own track record, the Cole Norman-trained seven-year-old charge galloped home in 1:40 & 4/5 for the mile and one-sixteenth. The margin of victory was two lengths over Kris Havingfunnow.

Roman Chapa made the trip from Shreveport to ride the winner. “He loves this turf course,” said Chapa. “The old boy really dug in. He's got heart,” Chapa added.

Trainer Danny Pish sizzled the first three nights of the four night weekend. Pish, who annually tops the trainer standings at Retama Park, saddled six winners in three nights to move into a tie (nine wins) with Steve Asmussen after seven nights of the 48-night meet.

Jockey Jeremy Beasley booted home three winners Saturday to extend his lead in the rider standings with eleven trips to the winner's circle.
