Compendium Romps In Chick Lang Memorial Handicap for Asmussen

(September 14, 2002)- Sent off as the 1-2 favorite in Saturday night's feature, Compendium took jockey Casey Lambert on a ride "like a walk in the park," as Lambert described it after the race. The four-year-old Florida-bred was never headed after starter Dennis Hall kicked open the gate.

"This is a tremendous horse," said Lambert. "Once we got the lead, I let him go at his own pace and he opened up easily on the rest of the field." The running time of 1.37 4/5 for the one mile was only above average time, but the ease with which the winner galloped home was impressive. He won by eight lengths over Artic Boy.

John Celia, racing manager for Ackerley Brothers Farm, the winning owners, accepted the winning trophy from Bart Lang, son of the late Chick Lang, Jr. Chick Jr. was the first General manager at Retama Park who passed away in 1994. The Lang family has been prominent in racing since the early 1900's and Chick Lang, Sr. was GM at Pimlico for over three decades. Bart Lang is a racing official at Lone Star Park.
