Calhoun Looks to Remain Hot in Grade 3, $200,000 Lone Star Derby on Saturday

(Grand Prairie, Texas - May 5, 2010) - Saturday’s 14th running of the Grade 3, $200,000 Lone Star Derby, for 3-year-olds, to be run at 1 1/16 miles over the main track, features the very promising Henshin Hero, owned by Cheyenne Stable LLC, and trained by Bret Calhoun. The 8-5 morning-line favorite, Henshin Hero, who will be ridden by Bobby Walker Jr., owns a race record of three wins from five starts, with his three victories earned in decisive fashion. In his two losses, he unseated his rider at Oaklawn Park in his first start of 2010, and in his most recent race, he finished second at Keeneland while trying turf for the first time.

“He’s a very, very nice horse who has never been two turns,” said trainer Bret Calhoun. “We wanted to stretch him out sooner, it just didn’t work out, and we thought this was a good spot to try him at two-turns.”

Bob Baffert, who shipped Mythical Power to Lone Star Park to win the Grade 3 Texas Mile on April 24, ships in Game On Dude for the Lone Star Derby. Seventh in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 20, Game On Dude was most recently seen finishing fifth in the Grade 3 Derby Trial at Churchill Downs. Baffert is seeking his fourth victory in the Lone Star Derby, Anet (1997), Wanna Runner (2006), and Mythical Power (2009).

Lone Star Park’s all-time leading trainer, Steve Asmussen, sends out Heiligbrodt Racing Stables Crider. A winner of two of six starts, the bay son of Closing Argument finished fourth in the $100,000 Smarty Jones Stakes, and fifth in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes earlier this year. Both races were run at Oaklawn Park.

The field from the rail out, with jockey and morning line odds listed in parenthesis, consists of: Wando Redd (Chris Landeros, 12-1); Gilded Woodman (Jorge Guzman, 50-1); Thatlleaveamark (Martin Escobar, 30-1); Game on Dude (Martin Garcia, 9-5); Henshin Hero (Bobby Walker Jr., 8-5); and Crider (Aaron Gryder, 2-1).

Scheduled as race 9 on the 10-race program, the Grade 3 Lone Star Derby has an approximate post time of 5:19 p.m.
