Majestic City Takes Down Carve and Tapiture to Win the Grade 3 $200,000 Lone Star Park Handicap

Grand Prairie, Texas (Monday, May 25, 2015) - West coast invader Majestic City held off a battling Carve and a fast closing Tapiture to take the prize in the 19th edition of the Grade 3 Lone Star Park Handicap today at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie.

After an hour and 22 minute delay between the fourth and fifth races Monday, more heavy thunderstorms moved through the area. However, live racing resumed, and the card of 10 races completed.

At the post, it was sloppy going for the ninth and featured Grade 3 Lone Star Park Handicap. A field of five starters competed for the prize, and it was Majestic City first at the wire. Final time for the mile and one sixteenth race was 1:36.82, with fractions of :24.01, :47.06, and 1:11.43.

Owned by Bloom Racing Stable LLC of Solano Beach, California, and trained by Richard Baltas, Majestic City raced on the inside of and shared the lead with Cy Seven until putting him away midway through the backstretch. Majestic City then took on favorite Carve. The pair traded the lead while inches apart. When set to a drive in the final sixteenth, it was Majestic City that put away Carve to win by two lengths under a strong hand ride.

"I was never worried really down the backside. He was going really easy underneath me," said jockey Charles Lopez. "When I got hooked up at the three eighths pole, he's gritty, so he just dug in and did his job."

Mutuels returned $15.00, $4.80 and $2.40 for the winner. Carve returned $2.40 and $2.10 for place, and Tapiture returned $2.10 on show wagers. Endurance and Cy Seven completed the order of finish. Texas Air was a late scratch.

With the winner's share of the purse, Majestic City, a six-year-old horse by City Zip, increased his earnings to $579,210. It was his fifth win from 25 career starts.

Jockey Ivan Arellano was injured in the eighth race today. He was thrown from his mount, Witt's Tax Day, after entering the starting gate. He had swelling of the left ankle and was transported to Texas General Hospital in Grand Prairie for X-rays and further evaluation. Jockey Jacob Radosevich was assigned as the replacement rider and finished third in the race.
