Very Geri Captures San Antonio Oaks

(October 25, 2002)- On the eve of Breeder's Cup 2002, Retama Park posted its largest handle of the meeting as Very Geri won the $30,000 feature under a perfectly timed ride by Glen Murphy. Almost 1.5 million-dollars was wagered Friday night.

Murphy waited patiently for favored Sheza Nasty Lady, who set easy fractions of 24.9 and 49.4 but could not handle the yielding turf course. Very Geri blew by the pace setter to beat a game Manzonitta by three lengths. Trained by Eddie R. Milligan, Very Geri is now 3 for 6 lifetime after capturing her first stakes win. Time for the mile and one-sixteenth was 1.47 and 2/5.
