October 22: Six Breeders' Cup Horses to Work at Lone Star on Saturday

(October 22, 2004)- Six of the 13 probable starters stabled at Lone Star Park this week will work Saturday in anticipation of the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships at Lone Star Park one week later on Oct. 30. Roses in May, Kitten’s Joy, Dynever, Magistretti, Wonder Again and Culinary are all scheduled for their final serious drills at the Grand Prairie racetrack between 6:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.

Workouts are open to the public for free as part of the Daybreak at Lone Star program from 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. mornings through Oct. 29. The viewing will be extended Saturday for the turf works scheduled at 10 a.m. after the main track closes.

Dynever (pointing to the $4 million Breeders’ Cup Classic – Powered by Dodge) plans to be the first Breeders’ Cup contender to breeze Saturday at about 7 a.m., according to trainer Christophe Clement’s assistant, Christophe Lorieul.

Roses in May (Classic) will likely appear at about 8:30 a.m. following the renovation break, as he has done the last three mornings since arriving Tuesday, for a five-furlong effort.

Trainer Michael Stidham hopes to work Culinary ($1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies) but will wait until the morning to decide whether to go early or after the break.

Kitten’s Joy ($2 million John Deere Breeders’ Cup Turf), Magistretti (Turf) and Wonder Again ($1 million VO5 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf) are scheduled to take to the turf course after the main track closes at 10 a.m. A fourth horse, trainer Paddy Gallagher’s $100,000 Texas Turf Stakes hopeful Needwood Blade, will also be on the inner course.

Other contenders already on the grounds with plans to breeze in coming days include Sense of Style (Juvenile Fillies), who trainer Patrick Biancone said will work Sunday; Royal Regalia ($1.5 million NetJets Breeders’ Cup Mile), who trainer Justin Nixon said will work Monday “as if he’s in” while needing a defection to draw into the race; and Bwana Charlie ($1 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint), who trainer Steve Asmussen said will work Tuesday.

Beginning Saturday, horses pre-entered to the Breeders’ Cup will bear name-embossed purple saddlecloths at Lone Star.

Beginning Sunday, the turf course will be open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. for horses pointing to the Breeders’ Cup or Lone Star stakes.
